BLACKWING PENCILS

THE CHALLENGE

In a world dominated by laptops, tablets, and styluses, pencils can feel like a thing of the past.

Blackwing is beloved by serious artists and illustrators, but how can the brand build broader relevance and sales by reaching everyday creatives who might not see themselves as “artists” yet?

THE SOLUTION

Position Blackwing as a tool for inspiration, not intimidation. A pencil that doesn’t demand perfection, just curiosity. By encouraging self-expression at every level, Blackwing becomes the pencil that helps people start.

THE INSIGHT

Everyone has an inner creative. Most of us just need permission (and the right pencil) to explore it.

TRENDS THAT INFORMED THE STRATEGY+INSIGHT

  • 44% of arts & crafts consumers consider themselves beginners

  • Consumers love brands that collaborate with communities and creators

  • 52% of arts & crafts inspiration comes from social media

  • There’s growing demand for brands that feel both authentic and inclusive

Takeaway: Creativity isn’t reserved for professionals. Most people want to try something new, they just need the right nudge—and the right tools.

KEY MESSAGE

Blackwing helps everyone grow creatively; no matter what level of artist you are.

OPPORTUNITY

Position Blackwing as the go-to pencil for beginner and everyday creatives by celebrating the brand’s craftsmanship, creative community, and collaborative spirit, both online and IRL.

STRATEGY

Launch an interactive campaign that reframes Blackwing as a brand for everyone with a creative impulse. Make the process of creating-doodling, sketching, writing, planning- feel inviting, inspiring, and worth sharing.

Use digital-first storytelling, social media content, and artist/creator collabs to bring the brand’s purpose to life: start anywhere, grow from there.

IDEATION---

START WITH A LINE

Because every masterpiece starts somewhere.

Concept: A campaign designed to lower the barrier to entry for creativity. “Start With a Line” encourages users to pick up a pencil and make something (a doodle, a sketch, a sentence, a list) then share it. The simplicity makes it inclusive. The creative momentum makes it magnetic.

How it Fits: It taps into authenticity and removes intimidation. You don’t need to be an artist to participate—just curious enough to make a mark.

Executions:

  • TikTok/IG Series: Creators show how they “start with a line,” then time-lapse what it becomes (a doodle, comic, letter, etc.)

  • Social Challenge: Share your line + tag 3 people to keep the chain going

  • Physical Activations: Street posters and pop-ups with empty sketch panels and the headline: “Start With a Line”

BLACKWING STARTER SETS

For the beginner who doesn’t know where to begin.

Concept: A limited-edition kit that includes a pencil, sharpener, prompt booklet, and QR access to short video tutorials or challenges from real artists and creators. Each kit is designed to feel like a creative invitation, not a class.

How it Fits: It creates an approachable entry point for those who are curious but unsure, and reintroduces analog tools in a tech-heavy world.

Executions:

  • Beginner Kits sold online and in retail (co-branded with museums, bookstores, or stationery boutiques)

  • QR Code Integration: Quick drawing/writing tutorials: “How to fill a page when you’re stuck,” “Draw your daily mood in 30 sec”

  • Creator Collab Content: “How I use my Blackwing as a [poet, designer, student, comic artist]”

THE ART OF EVERYDAY

Where beauty meets utility.

Concept: Reposition the pencil not just as a tool for art, but for life. Create content and activations that show Blackwing in everyday creative rituals: planning, journaling, daydreaming, organizing chaos. Feature real people doing real things—beautifully.

How it Fits: It broadens the brand’s relevance to everyday creators, not just visual artists, driving frequency and accessibility.

Executions:

  • IG Reels + TikTok POV Series: “A day in the life of my notebook,” “How I sketch out my thoughts”

  • Influencer Collab: Partner with creators who aren’t traditional artists—chefs, teachers, students, interior designers—who use Blackwing in creative ways

  • Retail Shelf + Digital Ads: “Not just for art. For ideas.”

  • IRL Pop-Up: Interactive journaling walls where people can add their daily sketch, mantra, or brainstorm
